Built for theory examinations
Mark handwritten scripts faster. Keep every grade yours.
GradeWise reads scanned answer booklets, checks each answer against your rubric and suggests marks with evidence. You review, adjust and approve. Nothing becomes final without you.
- Lecturer approval on every mark
- Evidence for every suggestion
- No training on student work

The problem
Large classes, hundreds of booklets, a short results window, and arithmetic that has to be right.
Our approach
Automate the repetitive parts (reading, organising, totalling, first-pass rubric checks) and leave judgement to you.
The result
A review screen where every mark has its evidence, and an audit trail that can answer any query.
How it works
From scanned booklet to a class results sheet in five steps
- 1
Set the rubric
Enter each question, its marks and the criteria you award marks for, just as in your marking scheme.
- 2
Upload scripts
Drop in scanned PDFs or photos and tag each with the student’s examination number and, optionally, their name.
- 3
Check the extraction
See every page beside the transcribed answer. Fix misread words or move text to the right question.
- 4
Review and approve
Each criterion comes with a suggested mark, the quoted evidence and a reason. You accept, edit or reject it.
- 5
Export to Excel
Download one workbook for the whole class: every student’s name and score across all their exams, plus a sheet per exam.
Features
Everything a marking team needs, nothing it doesn’t
Criterion-level suggestions
Marks are suggested per rubric criterion, not as one opaque number, with exact quotes from the answer.
Handwriting extraction
Scanned pages are transcribed and split by question labels such as Q1 or 1(a), with page references kept.
Uncertainty is flagged
Unreadable words, low-confidence pages and missing answers are highlighted. They are never silently scored as zero.
Totals you can trust
Totals are calculated by the system from approved marks, never taken from the AI.
Full audit trail
Uploads, corrections, approvals and every score change are recorded with who made them and why.
Class results in Excel
Group exams by class and export them together: student names, per-exam totals, overall percentage and a sheet per exam.
Trust & privacy
Designed for academic accountability
Examination scripts are confidential records. GradeWise keeps the original upload unchanged, separates AI suggestions from approved marks, and limits every workspace to its own institution.
Read our privacy policy →Human approval
AI output is labelled as a suggestion until a lecturer approves it.
Institution isolation
Each workspace sees only its own courses, scripts and results.
No biometric use
Handwriting is transcribed, never used to identify students.
NDPA-aligned
Built around Nigeria Data Protection Act principles: minimisation, retention, rights.

Frequently asked
- Does the AI decide the grades?
- No. Every AI mark is a suggestion until a lecturer approves it. You can edit or reject any suggestion, and rejected suggestions never become a zero.
- What kinds of questions are supported?
- Text-based theory questions marked against a rubric. Mathematical working, diagrams and chemical structures are not supported yet.
- Is student work used to train AI models?
- No. Scripts are processed only to transcribe and assess them for your institution, and handwriting is never used to identify anyone.
- Can I export a whole class at once?
- Yes. Give exams the same class name and export them together as one Excel workbook, with each student’s name and approved score for every exam. Marks not yet approved are left blank.
- What if the handwriting is hard to read?
- Unreadable words are marked and the answer is flagged for you. You can correct the text against the scan before any grading happens.
